McCollum was traded back to the Red Wings organization Saturday, with a conditional draft pick awarded to the Flames, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports. The Flames had actually loaned the minor-league tender to AHL Charlotte last March, which goes to show that he wasn't needed by a Calgary team that's been busy grooming a top goalie prospect in Jon Gillies. As for McCollum, Detroit selected him with the 30th overall pick in the 2008 draft, but he's played in just three NHL games to date and hasn't had the pleasure of doing so since the 2014-15 campaign.
McCollum was loaned to AHL Charlotte -- via Stockton -- on Wednesday. Charlotte is associated with the NHL's Hurricanes. While McCollum's star eventually faded after the Red Wings selected him in the first round of the 2008 draft -- he only appeared in three games at hockey's highest level -- he has extensive experience in the AHL and ECHL. He'll be joining system vets Michael Leighton and Daniel Altshuller in Charlotte.
McCollum signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Flames on Saturday, beat writer Dhiren Mahiban reports. McCollum is a former Red Wings prospect who played extensively for their minor-league affiliate in Grand Rapids. Despite getting drafted with the 30th overall pick in 2008, the New York native has only made his way into three NHL games to date. He'll presumably an emergency replacement for a Flames club that previously lacked depth between the pipes.
The Red Wings re-signed Tom McCollum to a one-year contract Wednesday, the team's official site reports.
