Gudas was traded to the Capitals from the Flyers on Monday in a swap for Matt Niskanen. Philadelphia will retain 30 percent of Gudas' salary in order to provide Washington with some cap relief. Gudas doesn't provide nearly the same offensive touch as Niskanen, but he only has one year remaining on his contract, and will make significantly less than Niskanen in 2019-20, providing Washington with some much-needed cap space. . With youngsters Nick Jensen and Christian Djoos pushing for more play time, Gudas won't find minutes easy to come by, but should still find a spot in the Opening Night lineup.
Gudas scored four goals and 20 points with a plus-6 rating, 63 PIM, 136 shots on net, 255 hits and 133 blocks in 77 games this season. Except for games played, Gudas didn't record any other career bests, but he was strong in every category. In his previous six seasons, Gudas averaged about three goals, 14 points, a plus-5 rating, 102 shots on net, 205 hits and 106 blocks, so he was above his average in all of those categories during 2018-19. The only disappointment Gudas experienced was in the PIM department. This season was the first time he averaged fewer than 1.0 PIM per contest.
Gudas has four goals and 20 points with a plus-8 rating, 63 PIM, 134 shots on goal, 255 hits and 130 blocks in 76 games this season. The 28-year-old had previously never posted such a scant PIM total, so he's fallen short in that department, but Gudas has produced about what was expected of him, and maybe a little more, in every other area. He has more goals, assists, points, blocked shots and hits than a season ago. If Gudas posts a plus-1 rating in the season finale, he will also set a career-high in plus-minus.
Gudas posted an assist, a minus-1 rating, two PIM, three hits, four blocks and two shots on net in a 4-2 loss to the Islanders on Saturday. The 28-year-old has been the usual hits and blocks specialist this season, but he's also chipped in a fair amount of scoring. He's now just one point shy of the third 20-point campaign of his career, and Gudas also has a career-high plus-8 rating. The only bad news is his PIM are down to 59. He's averaged 1.37 PIM per game over the last three seasons, but in 2018-19, he's at just 0.83 PIM per contest. Gudas has three goals and 19 points in 71 games.
Gudas scored a goal and an assist in Friday's 7-6 loss to the Maple Leafs. It's only the third multi-point performance of the season for the rugged defenseman, with the last one coming Jan. 14 against the Wild. Gudas now has three goals and 17 points through 67 games, just topping last year's offensive output, but he provides plenty of fantasy value in secondary categories with 119 shots, 226 hits, 118 blocked shots, 55 PIM and a plus-8 rating.
