The Panthers loaned Sateri to AHL Springfield on Wednesday. The Panthers claimed Antti Niemi off waivers Tuesday, who will serve as James Reimer's backup while starting netminder Roberto Luongo (thumb) is sidelined, so they're no longer in need of Sateri's services. He'll head back to the minors and return to his role as AHL Springfield's starting backstop.
Sateri was called up from AHL Springfield on Saturday. With chief backstop Roberto Luongo (thumb) considered day-to-day ahead of the evening's road contest against the Capitals, the Panthers promoted Sateri as an insurance policy behind James Reimer, the team's normal backup. The Finnish tender with the cool, rhyming name hasn't made a single NHL appearance since the Sharks originally drafted him with a 2008 fourth-round pick, but he'd obviously be a better emergency option than, say, an equipment manager.
Sateri agreed to terms with the Panthers on a one-year, two-way contract Saturday. The Finn spent the last four seasons honing his craft with Chekhov Vityaz of the KHL. Before that, he'd appeared in 129 games with the Sharks' minor-league affiliate. It's hard to envision the 27-year-old bursting onto the fantasy scene anytime soon -- if ever.
