  • Irwin posted just his fourth point of the season with an assist in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Blackhawks. As a third-pairing defender who averages under 14 minutes of ice time, Irwin's fantasy value is almost nonexistent in most standard formats. Scoring-wise, he's on pace for something similar to the 14 points he put up last season. In other words, there's not much to see here.

  • Predators' Matt Irwin: Scores in Tuesday win
    By RotoWire Staff

Irwin scored a goal and registered six shots through 10:48 of ice time during Tuesday's 3-1 win over Columbus. While Irwin has developed into a steady, stay-at-home defenseman in the real game, his role limits his fantasy value considerably. He's averaging just 13:45 of ice time per contest, after all. The 29-year-old blueliner is off the grid in most setups.

  • Predators' Matt Irwin: Battling for ice time
    By RotoWire Staff

Irwin returned to the lineup Thursday against the Sharks after sitting out the previous two games as a healthy scratch. The Preds are currently carrying two extra defensemen on the roster, meaning Irwin has to compete with Yannick Weber and rookies Samuel Girard and Anthony Bitetto for a spot on the team's third pairing. Of the four, Irwin has played the most (10 of a possible 12 games), but he has yet to record a point this season. For fantasy purposes, he doesn't really move the needle and should be avoided in almost all formats.

  • Predators' Matt Irwin: Not moving fantasy needle
    By RotoWire Staff

Irwin has no points through five games this season, averaging 16:03 of ice time with eight shots on goal. Irwin has been a steady presence on the Preds' blue line so far, being just one of three defensemen to have played in all five games to start the season. The problem is, aside from not being much of a scorer (14 points in 74 games last season), Irwin doesn't feature prominently in any other stat category either, including minutes played, plus-minus, hits, blocked shots or PIM. From a fantasy standpoint, he really doesn't move the needle and should be avoided in almost all formats.

  • Predators' Matt Irwin: Ultra-rare two-point game
    By RotoWire Staff

Irwin notched a pair of assists despite being on the ice for only 10:30 during Tuesday's 5-4 overtime victory in Buffalo. This was only his second multi-point game of the season, with the last one having come Nov. 5., and it also ended a 12-game point-free skid during which Irwin put just six shots on net. Unless your league gives heavy weight to hits, blocks and plus-minus -- and he isn't even elite in any of those categories -- there's nothing to see here for fantasy purposes.
