Atkinson managed just 12 goals and 14 assists in 44 games before the suspension of play in mid-March. The Connecticut native missed two large chunks of games (12 and 14) due to injury, but the lack of goal scoring is still bothersome after last year's 41-tally explosion. We're inclined to give Atkinson a bit of an injury-based pass considering his previous six seasons featured 21, 22, 27, 35, 24 and (the aforementioned) 41 goals, but owners will be clamoring for a return to his lamp-lighting ways once he's fully healthy.
Atkinson (ankle) expects to return to the lineup for Thursday's game against Pittsburgh, Alison Lukan of The Athletic reports. Atkinson skated with Riley Nash and Eric Robinson on the Blue Jackets' third line during Wednesday's morning skate, so that's likely where he'll slot in against the Penguins. The 30-year-old winger has had an underwhelming year from an offensive standpoint, having totaled just 12 goals and 26 points in 44 games after racking up 41 goals and 69 points in 80 contests a season ago, so Columbus will hope that he'll be able to pick it up down the stretch and help propel his team into the playoffs.
Atkinson (ankle) isn't traveling with the team but could join them at some point on the road trip, which ends Sunday in Vancouver, Brian Hedger of NHL.com reports. Atkinson has missed 11 games with a high-ankle sprain, and although he won't be with the team for Wednesday's game versus the Flames, he could fly out for the back-to-back series Saturday and Sunday. The Blue Jackets have a ton of firepower on the mend, so Atkinson and his 26 points through 44 games would be a welcome addition as they make a playoff push.
The Blue Jackets placed Atkinson (ankle) on injured reserve Sunday. The 30-year-old was already expected to miss 2-3 weeks with the ankle issue, so this move was to create a roster spot for recent call-up Kole Sherwood. Atkinson has struggled prior to getting hurt, as he's currently riding a seven-game pointless streak. As long as he's sidelined, Oliver Bjorkstrand looks like the main beneficiary to ascend to a top-six role.
Atkinson is set to miss 2-3 weeks due to a sprained ankle. Atkinson previously was sidelined for 12 games this season due to an ankle issue and will now miss a similar stretch of time. Prior to getting hurt, the winger was bogged down in a seven-game pointless streak dating back to Jan. 18 versus the Devils. With Atkinson on the shelf, Emil Bemstrom and Oliver Bjorkstrand should both get opportunities to log significant minutes in top-six roles.
