Hyka was assigned to AHL Chicago on Tuesday. Despite a decently strong showing during the preseason, Hyka was not able to make the Opening Night roster and will begin his NHL quest in the minors. That said, there's sure to be a lot of variables with the new expansion team in its inaugural season, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see the 24-year-old receive a recall sooner rather than later.
Hyka recorded a goal and an assist in Tuesday's preseason game against the Avalanche. This was Hyka's first matchup against NHL competition, and he shined. On top of his two points, he recorded a plus-2 rating and fired three shots on goal while logging just 11:15 of ice time. The 24-year-old forward is on the roster bubble, so even if he keeps producing in preseason action, he may find himself starting the season with AHL Chicago.
Hyka signed an entry-level contract with the Golden Knights on Thursday, Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reports. After being drafted by the Kings in 2012, Hyka went unsigned, making him available to be picked up by Vegas. The 24-year-old skated with Mlada Boleslav of the Czech Extraliga last season, where he led the team in goals (17), assists (21) and points (38). What he lacks in size -- 5-foot-11 and 174 pounds -- he makes up for in speed and stick-handling skills. It'll be interesting to see where Hyka fits into the new club's roster once both drafts take place later in June.
