Nichushkin is expected to return to the Stars following the 2017-18 season. Nichushkin spent 2016-17 with CSKA Moscow -- where he will again play this upcoming year -- following a 79-game season with Dallas. The winger tallied 64 points in his two full NHL campaigns and should provide some bottom-six scoring depth once he rejoins the club.
Nichushkin is headed for the KHL after agreeing to terms on a two-year deal with CSKA Moscow on Tuesday, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports. Nichushkin will officially remain designated as a Stars player after the team issued him a qualifying offer this past offseason. The 21-year-old was poised to have a big season, but after the two sides could not come to an agreement an a new deal, Nichushkin will head back to Russia rather than play in the NHL.
Nichushkin will remain a restricted free agent after Dallas gave him a qualifying offer Monday. Nichushkin ended the year on a 26-game scoring drought that dated back to Mar. 4. Over that span, the 21-year-old snagged a mere four assists which drastically decrease his fantasy value as the season progressed. It appears that the Stars were impressed enough with his abilities, however to submit a qualifying offer in order to retain his rights.
Nichushkin was made a healthy scratch in Game 6. Through five postseason games, Nichushkin has yet to register a point. He has just three shots and a minus-2 rating, despite the fact that the Stars are up 3-2 in games he's played in. The big winger has a lot to give, and he hasn't shown it in the postseason so far.
Nichushkin yet again failed to register a point, even though the Stars managed to score six in Tuesday's win over Chicago. After starting to score with a little more consistency, Nichushkin has failed to score in eight games, posting just one assist over that time. He's getting out there with some very good teammates, but he's failed to produce consistently all season. It's tough to trust him, knowing that a drought could be just around the corner at any given moment.
