McGinn finished the month of December riding a six-game pointless streak, his longest of the season. The Canes are playing well as of late, with a 7-3-0 record in their last 10 games, but McGinn has not been much of a contributor. With 15 points in 37 games, he is now just one point away from last season's career high, but he still needs to show more consistency on a game-to-game basis before he can be recommended as a worthwhile fantasy option.
McGinn didn't record a point on four shots during Saturday's 3-2 overtime win over Florida, but added three hits, a blocked shot and seven PIM. With 12 points in 24 games this season, including six goals, McGinn isn't having a bad year considering his bottom-six role. Unfortunately, he's rather streaky as far as scoring goes -- he had four goals over three games back in early November, but he's only registered three points in 10 games since then. McGinn isn't a bad pickup if you're in a deeper fantasy format, but be prepared for long droughts where you don't see much out of him.
McGinn scored two goals in Saturday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Blackhawks. The goals stretch his current goal streak to three games and four goals. This sniping is out of character for McGinn, who had only delivered 10 goals in 78 games over the previous two seasons. Now, he has five in 14 games. Opportunity won't knock forever. Use McGinn until his game dries up.
McGinn scored a goal on three shots through 10:17 of ice time during Tuesday's 3-1 win over Florida. The 23-year-old winger has recorded two goals, six points and 17 shots while averaging just 11:48 of ice time through 12 games this season. Additionally, McGinn projects to remain in a bottom-six role, so there aren't many fantasy settings where he's a serviceable asset.
McGinn recorded an assist during Thursday's 2-1 win over the Flames. After sitting out as a healthy scratch the previous game, McGinn was back in the lineup skating on the third line alongside Jeff Skinner and Derek Ryan. He made the most of his season-high ice time of 12:38, assisting on Skinner's second-period goal to open the scoring. Overall, with just 16 points in 57 games last season, McGinn doesn't possess much fantasy value at the present time.
