The Maple Leafs loaned Petan to AHL Toronto on Friday. Trevor Moore (shoulder) is expected to return to action Saturday against Edmonton, so the Leafs are no longer in need of Petan's services on the wing.
Petan was promoted from AHL Toronto on Friday. Petan and fellow call-up Pontus Aberg will compete for roster spots after Andreas Johnsson (leg) was placed on long-term injured reserve. In 13 appearances for the Leafs this year, Petan has notched three helpers, 17 shots and four PIM while averaging 11:34 of ice time. The center has impressed in minimal action with the Marlies with seven points in three games.
Petan was demoted to AHL Toronto on Wednesday. Petan's reassignment comes as the team activates Mitch Marner (ankle) off injured reserve. The 24-year-old Petan excelled in his previous stint with the Marlies, as he racked up seven points in three games. If he can continue to produce at that level in the minors, the winger will force team brass to give him another look in the NHL.
The Maple Leafs recalled Petan from AHL Toronto on Tuesday. Mitch Marner is expected to be sidelined for at least four weeks with an ankle injury, so Petan is likely in for an extended stay with the Leafs. The 24-year-old forward has notched one assist in five NHL appearances this season.
Petan was waived by the Maple Leafs on Thursday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports. Petan has played in just five games for Toronto this season, in which he tallied one assist, six shots and four hits while averaging 8:42 of ice time. Considering the center has 118 NHL games under his belt and carries a modest $775,000 cap hit, there could be a number of teams in the mix to claim him off waivers. If Petan clears, he figures to be reassigned to AHL Toronto.
