Khaira has set a goal to be more consistent this season. Khaira posted at least one goal or assist in back-to-back games just three times as a rookie last year, but his overall numbers (11 goals, 10 assists) through 69 games are respectable when you consider the pivot only averaged 12:42 of ice time and barely was deployed on the man advantage. According to this latest report, he's emphasized improving his speed and puck-handling in order to make a positive impression in training camp. Should his efforts pay off, Khaira might be able to avoid shuffling between AHL Bakersfield and the parent club this year.
Khaira finished the 2017-18 season by registering one point in the final 10 games. The 23-year-old center's last point of the season came as an assist on March 25 -- he ended his 2017-18 campaign with 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists) in 69 games. Khaira has bounced back and forth between Bakersfield and Edmonton over the past two seasons; when he has been up with the big club, he has yet to carve out a consistent role. The big winger's potential is as cloudy as his role in Edmonton.
Khaira scored a goal in Monday's 4-3 overtime victory against Arizona. Khaira's short-handed goal was his 11th of the season, giving him 19 points in 53 games. The 23-year-old center continues to be shuffled throughout the lineup and is still too inconsistent to be trusted outside of daily leagues.
Khaira lit the lamp in Saturday's 3-2 victory over the Kings. The 23-year-old center scored a career-high 10 goals for AHL Bakersfield in 2014-15 and tied that mark at the NHL level during the contest. With two of those goals coming in the last three games, Khaira is still best left on the wire but remains worth monitoring -- with more players expected to be shipped out of Edmonton before the trade deadline, better opportunities could arise for the British Columbia native.
Khaira delivered five hits in Monday's 6-2 victory over the Lightning. On a night where Edmonton was collecting points every period, Khaira trended in the other direction, registering five hits -- the most for the giant center since Jan. 12. Khaira now has 62 hits in 38 games in 2017-18. However, with only one point in his last six games, the British Columbia native only has value in deep leagues and those that accumulate hits.
