Rodrigues signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with the Penguins on Friday. Rodrigues was traded away by Pittsburgh in a six-player swap that included Kasperi Kapanen. However, the Leafs opted not to issue the winger a qualifying offer, which opened the door for Rodrigues to rejoin the Pens. The Toronto native figures to slot into a third-line role alongside Jared McCann and could be an option for the No. 2 power-play unit.
Rodrigues is not expected to receive a qualifying offer from the Maple Leafs on Wednesday, Kristen Shilton of TSN.ca reports. Rodrigues had 10 points in 45 games between the Sabres and Penguins last season before he was packaged to Toronto as part of the return for Kasperi Kapanen in a six-player trade. The 27-year-old Rodrigues has mostly filled a bottom-six role in the NHL, with career highs of nine goals and 29 points in 2018-19 with the Sabres. He will become an unrestricted free agent.
Rodrigues was sent to Toronto from Pittsburgh on Tuesday, along with Filip Hallander, David Warsofsky and a 2020 first-round draft selection, in a swap for Kasperi Kapanen, Pontus Aberg and Jesper Lindgren. Rodrigues saw action in just seven games with the Penguins after being acquired in a trade deadline deal, tallying one goal, 11 shots and four hits while averaging 11:08 of ice time. The Toronto native joins his hometown club after going undrafted coming out of Boston University. The winger will need to be re-signed this offseason, as he will be a restricted free agent and figures to demand an increase from his $2 million cap hit.
Rodrigues was traded to Pittsburgh from Buffalo on Monday, along with Conor Sheary, in a swap for Dominik Kahun (lower body), Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports. Rodrigues previously submitted a trade request to the Sabres, so his departure at the deadline shouldn't come as a shock. The center was a healthy scratch for the club's previous two contests, but he notched three goals and one assist in his prior nine. With the Pens also adding Sheary, it's not immediately clear where Rodrigues will fit, though a bottom-six role seems most likely.
Rodrigues recorded an assist and a plus-2 rating in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Maple Leafs. Rodrigues has found a bit of a scoring touch in February -- four of his nine points this year have come in the last eight games. The 26-year-old has added 61 shots on goal and a minus-8 rating in 2019-20. He projects as a non-physical, bottom-six player, which won't earn him much fantasy attention.
