Laine will bow out of the 2019 IIHF World Championship after dealing with groin/back issues in the playoffs, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports. Laine went through a handful of slumps this season, which could have been the result of playing hurt, and it showed on his year-end stat line, as the world-class sniper barely reached the 30-goal threshold and tallied his lowest point total (50) since breaking into the league. Still, the Finn remains one of the elite scorers in the NHL and should get back to being a 40-goal producer next season.
Laine scored a goal and added a power-play assist and three hits in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Blues in Game 3. Laine has scored a goal in each game of the series so far, adding seven hits and nine shots. It's not totally unexpected from the Finnish sniper, but he did end the regular season on a six-game pointless skid, so his playoff success is a welcome return to form. He'll look to keep the twine-tickling run going in Tuesday's Game 4.
Laine scored a power-play goal on five shots and added three hits in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Blues for Game 2 of their first-round series. Laine has two goals -- representing half of the Jets' offense in the series -- as well as eight shots in the first two games. He's coming off a career-worst 50 points in 82 games this year, but he still hit 30 goals, and he's showing all of his elite scoring skill so far. However, with coach Paul Maurice not having the last change in Games 3 and 4, Laine may find his matchups less favorable in St. Louis.
Laine scored a goal in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Blues in Game 1 of the best-of-seven series. Even in a loss, the Jets have got to be happy that Laine found the back of the net, considering the Finn had scored only one goal since March. 1. No other Jets player tickled twine Wednesday which resulted in Winnipeg dropping Game 1 at home. It'll now look to even the series Friday before it shifts to St. Louis.
Laine found the back of the net in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Stars. The power-play marker snaps Laine's goalless drought at 12 games and moves him up to 30 goals on the year, to go along with 20 assists. It's not all positive though, as Laine continues to struggle on the defensive side of things, owning a team-worst minus-17 rating through 76 games in 2018-19.
