Benning played his 50th game of the season Saturday against the Stars, recording three shots on goal, a blocked shot and a pair of penalty minutes. He failed to crack the scoresheet, however, leaving him with just four points on the season (one goal, three assists). The 26-year-old blueliner has not been a prolific scorer in his five NHL campaigns, with his career high of 21 points coming three seasons ago with the Oilers. Benning tends to focus more on his defensive responsibilities -- he currently ranks fourth among Predators defensemen in blocked shots (53) and second in hits (52). He's also one of the team's leading penalty killers with an average TOI of 2:02.
Benning notched an assist and three hits in Tuesday's 3-2 shootout win over the Red Wings. Benning saw 22:48 of ice time to cover for the absence of Dante Fabbro (undisclosed). Tuesday was just the fourth time this season Benning has played over 20 minutes. The 26-year-old blueliner has just three points, 44 hits, 36 blocked shots and 24 PIM through 38 contests, as he's mainly a defensive player. He's the only healthy right-shot defenseman on the Predators' roster currently, while Tyler Lewington is on taxi squad. Should Fabbro miss time, Benning would likely see first-pairing minutes.
Benning (upper body) will be in the lineup for Sunday's tilt with Chicago. Benning missed just one game with his upper-body issue. The 26-year-old has two points and a minus-3 rating in 33 games this season. He'll return to a bottom-pair role Sunday.
Benning (upper body) won't play in Saturday's game versus the Blackhawks. Benning is considered day-to-day, so he could return for Sunday's rematch against the Blackhawks. Jeremy Davies will enter the lineup in his place Saturday.
Benning scored a goal on his only shot of the game in Tuesday's 3-2 overtime loss to Carolina. He also had three hits and two blocks. Benning opened the scoring 61 seconds into the second period when his wrister from the point found its way through traffic and past Carolina netminder Alex Nedeljkovic. It was Benning's first goal in 25 games as a Predator and his first time lighting the lamp since Jan. 2020 with Edmonton. The 26-year-old Benning chipped in periodic offense during his four seasons with the Oilers but that hasn't materialized in Nashville; he has just two points and 21 shots on goal.
