The Panthers sent Montelbeault to AHL Springfield on Monday. In 14 appearances with the Panthers, Montembeault recorded a 3.34 GAA and .890 save percentage. It looks like Florida will use Chris Driedger as the backup goaltender behind Sergei Bobrovsky for the rest of the season barring another injury.
Montembeault made 25 saves in Sunday's 3-0 loss to the Flames. The 23-year-old didn't play poorly, but the Panthers were unable to solve Cam Talbot at the other end of the ice, giving Montembeault no margin for error. With Sergei Bobrovsky dealing with a minor lower-body injury, Florida may have to lean more heavily on its No. 2 netminder in the short term despite Montembeault's lackluster 3.34 GAA and .890 save percentage on the season.
Montembeault will start in the home net Sunday versus the Flames, George Richards of The Athletic reports. Sergei Bobrovsky was expected to start in net, but Montembeault ended up leading the team out for the first period. Montembeault has a 1-2-0 record and an .893 save percentage in February.
Montembeault surrendered four goals on 38 shots in a 5-3 loss to the Golden Knights on Saturday. Montembeault was kept busy by the Golden Knights throughout the game. They would overpower him with four goals (one on the empty net) in the final 30 minutes of the contest. The 23-year-old dropped to 5-4-1 with a 3.37 GAA and an .890 save percentage in 13 appearances. He's not likely to get much playing time even with Sergei Bobrovsky's year-long inconsistency.
Montembeault will guard the goal during Saturday's road game versus the Golden Knights, David Work of WPLG Local 10 News reports. Montembeault was pretty sharp in his last start last Saturday against the Oilers, turning aside 25 of 27 shots, but he ultimately suffered his fourth loss of the season due to a lack of goal support from his teammates. He'll attempt to get back in the win column in a tough road matchup with a red-hot Vegas team that's won four straight games.
