The Ducks waived Volkov unconditionally for purposes of contract termination Monday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports. Volkov scored eight points in 18 games with Anaheim last season but couldn't crack the NHL lineup this season and was waived in early October. Once he clears waivers he'll be free to sign anywhere in the league but it's possible he considers going back to his home country of Russia.

The 24-year-old should be a top candidate for a call-up if injuries arise among the Ducks' forwards, assuming he passes through waivers unclaimed.

  • Lightning's Alexander Volkov: Secures one-year deal

Volkov agreed to terms on a one-year, $700,000 contract with Tampa Bay on Wednesday, per agent Dan Milstein. The fact that Volkov's contract is one-way in nature is perhaps the most intriguing aspect considering the Lightning are already significantly over the cap and still need to lock up restricted free agent Anthony Cirelli before the start of training camp on Jan. 3. The Lightning's recent spending spree could be an indication Nikita Kucherov (hip) will start the season on long-term injured reserve which may open up a spot in the lineup for Volkov as a bottom-six option.

Volkov will make his NHL debut Wednesday against the Devils, Joe Smith of The Athletic reports. Volkov was called up after the injury to Patrick Maroon (upper body), and the 22-year-old will immediately enter a role with a couple of the best players in hockey. He has a solid track record in the AHL with back-to-back, 20-goal seasons, but it's far from anything special. However, he'll look to make the most of his opportunity Wednesday.

  • Lightning's Alexander Volkov: Recalled to big club

Volkov has been recalled from the AHL, reports the Tampa Bay Times. Volkov was one of the best players cut in the preseason. He has already put up three points in three games with AHL Syracuse and is needed to offset injuries to Anthony Cirelli and Pat Maroon. Volkov may be asked to suit up in Maroon's spot on the fourth line. It's less than ideal for the scorer -- Maroon is an energy guy counted on for his physicality. But NHL ice is always better than the AHL.
