Geekie was taken by Seattle from Carolina in Wednesday's 2021 NHL Expansion Draft, Sara Civian of The Athletic reports. Geekie -- who just signed a one-year deal with the Hurricanes on Friday -- will now be taking his talents to the Pacific Northwest. While the 23-year-old natural center is far from a lock for the Opening Night roster, he should at least have the opportunity to earn his place during training camp. He'll need to improve on his 2020-21 numbers in which he garnered nine points in 36 games while averaging 9:47 of ice time.
Geekie secured a one-year, two-way contract from Carolina on Friday. Geekie logged three goals and six assists in 36 games this year, all personal bests, in his first full NHL season. With an 82-game campaign and a more permanent roster spot, Geekie could top all three of those marks in 2021-22 as well, though his ceiling is likely in the 30-point range.
Geekie was promoted to the active roster for Monday's game against Nashville. As expected, Geekie will suit up in Monday's season finale against the Predators. He has nine points and 28 hits in 35 games this season.
Geekie was sent to the taxi squad Sunday, CapFriendly reports. Geekie has seven points and a plus-5 rating over the last 13 games. Expect the 22-year-old to be back in the lineup for Monday's season finale in Nashville.
