Malenstyn has been added to the Phase 3 training camp roster. Malenstyn registered seven goals and 15 points in 46 games with AHL Hershey during the 2019-20 regular season. The fifth-round pick from the 2016 NHL Entry Draft is expected to be a depth option for the duration of Washington's postseason run.
The Capitals reassigned Malenstyn to AHL Hershey on Sunday. Malenstyn was a call-up in mid-November, when a slew of injuries hit the Capitals forward group. With Carl Hagelin's (upper body) likely activation from injured reserve coming soon, and Nicklas Backstrom (upper body) nearing a return, Malenstyn's demotion was needed to clear space on the roster. The 21-year-old played three games with the big club and went pointless in that span.
The Capitalsl recalled Malenstyn from AHL Hershey on Wednesday. Nic Dowd and Carl Hagelin are both expected to be sidelined long-term with upper-body injuries, so Malenstyn could be in for an extended stay with the big club. The 21-year-old winger has notched six points in 18 appearances with Hershey this season.
