Kivlenieks was reassigned to AHL Cleveland on Friday. Veini Vehvilainen was called up in Kivlenieks' place and will likely serve as Joonas Korpisalo's backup as long as Elvis Merzlikins (upper body) is unavailable. Kivlenieks hasn't appeared in an NHL game this season.

Kivlenieks was promoted to Columbus' active roster Tuesday, Blue Jackets team reporter Jeff Svoboda reports. Elvis Merzlikins (upper body) was placed on injured reserve in a corresponding move, so Kivlenieks is likely in for an extended stay on the big club's roster. The 24-year-old Latvian has yet to appear in an NHL contest this year, but he could make his season debut soon.

Kivlenieks was recalled from AHL Cleveland to the taxi squad Sunday. Elvis Merzlikins hurt his arm during Saturday's loss to the Panthers. In turn, Kivlenieks will add depth at goalie moving forward, signaling that Merzlikins could miss time. Joonas Korpisalo is expected to take a bulk of the workload for the time being, but Kivlenieks could get a chance when back-to-backs happen.

Kivlenieks is currently the fourth goalie on Columbus' organizational depth chart, so he could be in for an extended stay in the minors. The 24-year-old Latvian went 1-1-2 while posting a 2.95 GAA and a .898 save percentage in six NHL appearances last season.
