Stenlund scored twice in AHL Cleveland's 6-5 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday. The hulking Swede finished the contest with a game-high six shots on goal. Stenlund's production has dried up following a quick start to the season. He has just three goals in his last 13 games for Cleveland and he went scoreless in a brief four-game stint with Columbus in January. The 22-year-old is better suited for a bottom-six role and can be ignored in all but the deepest dynasty leagues.
The Blue Jackets assigned Stenlund to AHL Cleveland on Sunday, Brian Hedger of NHL.com reports. Stenlund suited up for his first four NHL games in this stint, averaging 10:57 TOI and firing three shots on goal. The Blue Jackets don't play again until Tuesday versus the Sabres, and he could be recalled for that outing as a reserve option since the team has only 12 healthy forwards at the time.
Stenlund will make his NHL debut in Saturday's road game versus the Capitals, Tom Reed of The Athletic reports. Due to injuries to Markus Hannikainen (elbow) and Brandon Dubinsky (hamstring), Stenlund was called up from AHL Cleveland and will slot into the lineup. The Blue Jackets' second-round pick (58th overall) in 2015, Stenlund has had a serviceable year in the minors, recording nine goals and seven assists in 33 games. According to Tom Gulitti of NHL.com, Stenlund will work on the second line and should get plenty of chances to mark the scoresheet as a result.
Stenlund was recalled from AHL Cleveland on Friday. Stenlund could have his NHL debut coming up Saturday against the Capitals after piecing together 16 points -- nine goals and seven assists -- over 33 games thus far for the Monsters. The 22-year-old Swede was a second-round selection by the Blue Jackets in 2015, but he didn't debut in the AHL until last season. It's unlikely Stenlund would receive a ton of run for Saturday's contest even if he draws in, so his upside from a fantasy standpoint remains limited.
Stenlund scored a power-play goal in Saturday's 4-1 preseason loss to the Blackhawks. The 2015 second-round pick has quietly put together a very solid camp and preseason, and while the Jackets' forward depth doesn't leave any room for a surprise to emerge and crack the NHL roster to begin the year, Stenlund may have put himself on the short list of callups once injuries hit, particularly if the club needs a center.
