Suomela signed a one-year contract with the Sharks on Thursday. Suomela recorded eight points over 27 games last season -- in addition to six goals and 14 assists over 47 appearances with AHL San Jose -- and now will be able to look for a deeper role with the club. The loss of Joe Pavelski and possibly Joe Thornton benefits Suomela in that regard, but the emergence of Dylan Gambrell from the Barracudas could keep the 25-year-old in a bottom-six role.
The Sharks sent Suomela a qualifying offer prior to Tuesday's deadline. Suomela was decent in limited action with the big club last season, notching three goals and eight points in 27 appearances. He'll get a chance to battle for a regular spot in the lineup as a bottom-six center during training camp.
Suomela was recalled from AHL San Jose on Thursday, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Suomela registered 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) over 47 regular season games in the minors in addition to one assist in the Calder Cup Playoffs. The Finn has already seen NHL action with the Sharks this season, appearing in 27 games while posting eight points and averaging 11:19 of ice time per game.
Suomela will be a healthy scratch Saturday night when the Sharks play host to the Flyers, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reports. Kurz relayed this information from Sharks coach Peter DeBoer, so it's safe for fantasy owners to park Suomela on the virtual pine in daily contests. The undrafted center from Finland has adjusted well to NHL action, with Suomela adding one goal and three helpers to complement a plus-2 rating over 13 games, but he's currently mired in a three-game point drought and figures to benefit from having the night off.
Suomela recorded an assist and five shots while logging 13:14 of ice time Saturday's 4-1 win over the Islanders. Suomela is off to a good start in his NHL career with three assists in eight games despite averaging just under 11 minutes of ice time per outing. The 24-year-old Finn has plenty of offensive skill, but with the likes of Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture, and Joe Thornton (knee) to contend with, he could struggle to get enough quality ice time to extend his fantasy value beyond deeper leagues.
