Sandin (upper body) practiced Friday, Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reports. Sandin could be back in the lineup in time for Game 1 versus the Rangers on Sunday, but his status is still up in the air. Sandin ended the season with three goals and 23 points in 68 games, missing the last five contests with the injury. Consider him day-to-day at this time. Look for Dylan McIlrath to exit the lineup, if Sandin plays Sunday.... See More ... See Less

Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: LIkely done for regular season
Sandin (upper body) is not expected to return to the lineup before the end of the regular season, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports Friday. Sandin will have to hope that his teammates can secure a playoff in order to play again this season. The defenseman is currently stuck in a 21-game goal drought dating back to Feb. 22 versus the Lightning. During that stretch, the Swede has managed six assists, 20 shots and 32 blocks while averaging 20:21 of ice time. In Sandin's stead, Vincent Iorio figures to continue seeing minutes on the blue line.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Exits Sunday's contest
Sandin (upper body) will not return to Sunday's game against Ottawa. Sandin logged 7:09 of ice time before leaving Sunday's game. The 24-year-old has now been held without a point in seven straight contests. An update on his status should be available before Tuesday's game in Detroit.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Good to go
Sandin (lower body) will play Tuesday against the Sabres, Joe Yerdon of Bleacher Report reports. Sandin is expected to return to a second-pairing role and a spot on the No. 2 power-play unit following his one-game absence. He's picked up 23 points while averaging 21:21 of ice time through 64 contests this campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Returns to practice
Sandin (lower body) was on the ice for Monday's practice, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports. Sandin was a late scratch for Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Bruins, but his return to the ice is a good sign he could be ready in time for Tuesday's game against Buffalo. The 24-year-old had three points in his previous six games prior to the injury.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Unavailable Saturday
Sandin (lower body) won't play Saturday versus the Bruins. Vincent Iorio will enter the lineup in place of Sandin, who is considered day-to-day. Sandin's next chance to play is Tuesday versus the Sabres. He has 23 points over 64 contests this season.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Dishes helper
Sandin registered an assist and three blocked shots during Monday's 5-2 win over the Flames. Sandin had gone six games without a point prior to Monday's helper, which gives him a new career high of 21 points in 59 contests this season. Having recently signed a five-year, $23 million contract extension, the 24-year-old will be a mainstay in Washington's defense corps for years to come.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Agrees to five-year extension
Sandin signed a five-year, $23 million contract extension Wednesday. That represents a sizable raise over Sandin's existing two-year, $2.8 million deal. He was eligible to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights this summer. Sandin has three goals, 20 points, 57 hits and 85 blocks in 52 contests while averaging 21:19 of ice time this season. The 23-year-old has more offensive upside than he's demonstrated this year -- he finished the 2022-23 campaign with seven goals and 35 points in 71 outings between Toronto and Washington.... Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Poised to play
Sandin (undisclosed) is expected to play Sunday versus the Coyotes, according to Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post. Sandin appears to be good to go after missing Saturday's practice and being considered a game-time decision. He has picked up 13 of his 19 points this season over his past 20 appearances. Sandin also has 66 shots on goal, 83 blocked shots and 56 hits across 51 contests this campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Questionable for Sunday
Sandin (undisclosed) is questionable for Sunday's matinee matchup against the Coyotes, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports. Sandin took part in Saturday's optional skate but isn't a lock to take on the Coyotes. Ethan Bear is likely to draw in should Sandin, who has three goals and eight points in his last 15 games, be unable to play.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Tickles twine Thursday
Sandin registered a goal while logging 18:04 of ice time during Thursday's 5-3 win over the Lightning. Sandin took advantage of blown defensive zone coverage to fire home his fourth goal of the campaign. The 23-year-old had a sleepy start to the season, but with three goals and 11 points in his last 16 games, Sandin may have turned the corner at the right time as he heads towards restricted free agency in the summer.... Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Adds helper in overtime loss
Sandin recorded an assist and three shots on goal in Sunday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Canucks. Sandin's offense is starting to come around -- he has two goals and two assists over his last five games. The 23-year-old defenseman helped out on Nic Dowd's tally in the first period. Sandin has 15 points, 55 shots on net, 73 blocked shots, 44 hits and a minus-10 rating over 43 contests this season. He's still in a top-four role with power-play time, but Sandin will play second fiddle on the blue line as long as John Carlson is in the Capitals' lineup.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Good to go
Sandin (upper body) will be activated from injured reserve ahead of his return to the lineup Tuesday against Minnesota, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports. Sandin, who has missed the past eight games, is slated to be with Trevor van Riemsdyk in his return to the lineup. The 23-year-old Sandin should also see time on the second power-play unit. He has 11 assists, 45 shots on goal, 65 blocked shots and 34 hits in 36 games this season. Ethan Bear and Alexander Alexeyev are expected to be healthy scratches for Tuesday's contest.... Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: In regular jersey at practice
Sandin (upper body) is practicing in a regular jersey Thursday, per Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post. Sandin has missed the last six games -- this is the first time since rejoining practice a week ago that he's been able to shed his non-contact jersey. Sandin had five assists in his last five games before the injury, giving the defenseman 11 assists in 36 games. Should Sandin play Thursday versus St. Louis, he could replace Joel Edmundson in the lineup and see second-unit power-play time in place of Ethan Bear.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Practicing in non-contact jersey
Sandin (upper body) practiced in a non-contact jersey Friday, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports. Sandin was on the ice for the first time with his teammates since he was injured Jan. 3. Sandin left the ice before the end of practice. He is eligible to return to action off injured reserve at any time. Sandin has yet to score this season after lighting the lamp seven times last year, but he does have 11 assists in 36 games. Look for Joel Edmundson to become the seventh defenseman, upon the return of Sandin to the lineup.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: On injured reserve
Sandin (upper body) was put on injured reserve Thursday, per Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post. Sandin last played Jan. 3, so the move can be made retroactive to that date, in which case the defenseman would be eligible to be activated whenever he's healthy. The 23-year-old has 11 assists, 34 hits and 65 blocks in 36 outings in 2023-24. When Sandin is ready to return, Joel Edmundson might serve as a healthy scratch.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Still sidelined Thursday
Sandin (upper body) will not be in the lineup versus Seattle on Thursday, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports. Sandin will be shelved for a third consecutive game due to his upper-body problem. While the blueliner has yet to score a goal this season, he was finding his offensive stride before getting hurt with five helpers in his last five contests, including a pair of power-play helpers.... Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Dealing with upper-body issue
Sandin, who missed Sunday's win over LA due to an illness, is now considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports. Sandin should be regarded as questionable for Thursday's game versus Seattle. He was on a roll prior to missing the last two contests due to an illness, picking up five helpers through his last five outings.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Won't play Sunday
Sandin (illness) didn't practice Saturday and will miss Sunday's game versus the Kings, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports. Sandin also sat out Friday's 6-2 loss to the Hurricanes.
