2017 Belmont Stakes results: Tapwrit your winner after passing Irish War Cry late

Tapwrit was neck and neck all the way through the race with leader and favorite Irish War Cry, but needed one extra gear to pass him. He found it on the backstretch when he and Irish War Cry passed the rest of the field and Tapwrit turned on another gear, passing Irish War Cry with a flash.

Tapwrit, who was among the favorites coming into the race, waited patiently to make his move and beat Irish War Cry by a body length. Trainer Todd Pletcher earned his third Belmont Stakes win in the victory and was the first trainer since 1996 to win the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes with different horses.

Tapwrite was also the first horse to win out of the second post position since 1934, according to ESPN.

Tapwrit finished first with Irish War Cry second, Patch third and Gormley fourth. Another favorite heading into the race, Lookin at Lee, finished a disappointing seventh. Here is the complete order of finish from the race.
