Australian jockey dies after fall during race
Simone Montgomerie died after sustaining injuries from a fall during a race in Australia.
A female jockey died Monday after falling off her mount near the end of a race at the Darwin Cup in Australia. The remainder of the meet has been canceled.
Simone Montgomerie, 26, was atop Riahgrand in the sixth race when she fell off during the home stretch and later died at an area hospital.
''It is with great regret that we were advised by the family that Simone passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital,'' Darwin Turf Club chairman Brett Dixon told the Associated Press. ''Stewards agreed it was best to abandon the meeting in order to begin an investigation into this tragic event.
''As far as the Darwin Turf Club is concerned, she was our family, and we're all devastated by this accident.''
Montgomerie was said to have been a seasoned jockey, and, according to reports, had been riding since 2010.
