BBC Wimbledon commentator: Marion Bartoli 'not a looker'

Moments after Marion Bartoli’s dominating two-set, 6-1, 6-4 victory at the Wimbledon finals on Saturday, a BBC broadcaster tarnished the moment when he made disparaging comments about the Frenchwoman’s appearance.

John Inverdale, speaking on BBC Radio 5, asked, “Do you think Bartoli’s dad told her when she was little ‘You’re never going to be a looker. You’ll never be a [Maria] Sharapova, so you have to be scrappy and fight.’?”

He later tried to make amends for his insensitive comments, claiming “We poked fun, in a nice way, about how she looks … But Marion Bartoli is an incredible role model.”

Inverdale’s remarks prompted a BBC spokesman to apologize for the comments.

Bartoli, 28, became just the sixth woman in Wimbledon history to conquer the two-week tournament without dropping a set. Inverdale should probably just stick to Bartoli's flawless performance next time.
