Cops: LA prankster behind fake coaching offers in jail
The LAPD has arrested the man allegedly responsible for offering at least a dozen coaching positions to numerous big-name sports figures, NBC reported.
Remember the bizarre story of how the University of Southern California had to deny offering former Colts coach Tony Dungy and current Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio the recently vacated Trojans head coaching position?
The man responsible for that ordeal, as well as at least a dozen other prank high-profile job offerings, has been arrested by LAPD’s Hollywood Division detectives for allegedly illegally recording phone calls in the state of California, according to NBC.
Kenneth Edward Tarr, 32, reportedly had contact with big-name coaches from the NBA, NFL and various college football programs and led those sports figures to believe that he was offering them coaching positions.
According to NBC, such names as University of Hawaii coach Norm Chow, Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier, and Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt were victims of the supposed illegal eavesdropping.
As became public following USC’s ouster of Lane Kiffin, Tony Dungy was never actually offered the head coaching position of the Trojans, either. But that didn’t stop him from going on the Dan Patrick Show and claiming that USC had reached out.
Tarr reached out to Deadspin in October, claiming that he’d contacted such coaches as Dabo Swinney, Jay Gruden, and even the Golden State Warriors’ Mark Jackson. During conversations with Deadspin, Tarr passed along various videos and dropped numerous names seemingly to gain credibility.
According to Deadspin: “His hoaxes are a way of exposing the ‘bullshit’ and ‘arrogance’ that’s built into the sports and entertainment industries, both in what it takes for creative types to get ahead and how it’s all packaged and sold to the public.”
Tarr is being kept at the LAPD’s Hollywood Division jail, where his bail is set at $20,000.
The LAPD, throughout its two-month investigation, wasn't able to confirm how many franchises and college programs were impacted. Rest assured we'll keep close tabs on any new developments.
