Saturday is the signature day of the summer meet at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., and the 14-race card will be highlighted by Race 12, the 2021 Haskell Stakes featuring multiple stars from the spring's Triple Crown trail. Louisiana Derby winner and Belmont Stakes runner-up Hot Rod Charlie is the 6-5 morning-line favorite in the 2021 Haskell Stakes odds. Kentucky Derby runner-up Mandaloun is getting 2-1 odds in the seven-horse Haskell Stakes 2021 field.
The late-blooming Following Sea, who did not run in any of the Triple Crown races, is listed at 3-1, while Preakness Stakes runner-up Midnight Bourbon is getting 9-2 fourth. Post time for the $1 million race is set for 5:47 p.m. ET. With an accomplished field set to enter the starting gate on Saturday, you'll want to check out what handicapping wunderkind Matt Bernier has to say before making any 2021 Haskell Stakes picks.
Bernier is one of the country's most recognizable horse racing analysts. An on-air contributor to NBC's horse racing telecasts and the host of The Matt Bernier Show podcast, Bernier first gained renown in 2013 when, at 23 years old, he became the youngest qualifier at the time to qualify for the National Horseplayers Championship. He parlayed that success into a spot on the reality TV show Horseplayers, which followed professional horseplayers around the country.
Two of his biggest scores came in 2014. In the prestigious Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge that year Bernier finished sixth, earning $61,000 for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance charity. And he won $40,000 after winning the Aqueduct handicapping championship.
He also has cashed some Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks future bets at enormous odds, including 75-1 on I'll Have Another in 2012, 75-1 on Orb in 2013 and 35-1 on Shedaresthedevil in 2020.
Now, he has handicapped the 2021 Haskell Stakes field, made his picks and constructed his bets. You can only see them here.
Top 2021 Haskell Stakes picks
One shocker: Bernier, who analyzed the pace scenario and reviewed the past performances of every horse in the race, will not have a cent on Hot Rod Charlie, even though he is likely to leave the starting gate as the favorite, having been listed at 6-5 on the morning line.
Co-owned by five former Brown University football players in their 20s, this son of Oxbow is looking for his third career victory. He last won the Louisiana Derby on March 20.
But Hot Rod Charlie is coming off a huge, career-best performance when finishing second in the Belmont Stakes and is in danger of regressing off of that effort. Also, "[Trainer Doug] O'Neill will be stripping the blinkers from the 3-year-old colt for this race, a move that should not be viewed as a negative, but it does not necessarily represent a positive, either," Bernier tells SportsLine. Bernier is not using Hot Rod Charlie on any of his tickets.
How to make 2021 Haskell Stakes bets for Saturday
Bernier's top pick is a horse who "will make his move as the field rounds the far turn." Bernier is including this horse in his 2021 Haskell Stakes bets, and so should you. He's sharing which horses to back at SportsLine.
