Klinsmann names roster for first friendly of 2018 World Cup cycle
Jurgen Klinsmann named his 22-man roster for a friendly against the Czech Republic, featuring 10 holdovers from this summer's World Cup.
Jurgen Klinsmann named his 22-man roster for the USA’s upcoming friendly against the Czech Republic, and it includes 10 players from this summer’s World Cup team.
The game, scheduled for Sept. 3 in Prague, is essentially the team’s first exhibition of the 2018 World Cup cycle. Fifteen of the 22 players are 24 years or younger, underscoring Klinsmann’s emphasis on the new generation of US soccer.
“We have some great youngsters coming through the ranks that are starting to break through with their club teams and are ready to challenge for a spot on the Senior Team. Even most of our World Cup veterans from Brazil on this roster will be coming into the prime of their careers in the next four years,” Klinsmann said.
Bear in mind that star keeper Tim Howard recently announced that he was taking a one-year sabbatical from the national team, so Brad Guzan should feature in goal. Also, the highly anticipated one-game return of Landon Donovan is happening, just not for this game. He’ll make his final appearance for the national team on Oct. 10 against Ecuador in Connecticut.
The roster --
Keepers: Cody Cropper, Brad Guzan, Nick Rimando
Defenders: John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Timmy Chandler, Greg Garza, Fabian Johnson, Michael Orozco, Tim Ream
Midfielders: Alejandro Bedoya, Joe Corona, Mix Diskerud, Julian Green, Emerson Hyndman, Alfredo Morales, Brek Shea
Forwards: Jozy Altidore, Joe Gyau, Jordan Morris, Rubio Rubin, Bobby Wood
