Louisiana Derby odds, predictions 2019: Legendary expert who nailed Triple Crown races reveals picks
Hammerin' Hank Goldberg called the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont
There is no shortage of talent in Saturday's 2019 Louisiana Derby. Part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying series, the 11-horse showdown at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans has a post time of 6:10 p.m. ET. Last year, Noble Indy took down the Louisiana Derby in a time of 1:50.28, beating Lone Sailor and My Boy Jack. The live 2019 Louisiana Derby odds list War of Will, who won the first two stakes races on the track, as the 6-5 favorite to complete the sweep, something no horse has done here since 2000. Three other horses -- Country Horse (9-2), Spinoff (8-1) and Sueno (8-1) -- are also near the top of the odds board. Elite trainers like Todd Pletcher, William Mott and Steve Asmussen all have skin in the game on Saturday, so before placing any 2019 Louisiana Derby picks of your own, you'll want to see what legendary horse racing expert Hammerin' Hank Goldberg has to say.
If you put $50 on Goldberg's Preakness picks last year, you would have won over $11,000. You'd also be rolling in it if you followed his picks for the Arlington Million last August, as he nailed his exacta by fading the favorite to a huge payout. He also picked a 39-1 horse to show in the Secretariat Stakes, and that one paid off too.
Goldberg was dead-on throughout 2018, including at last year's Pegasus World Cup. He not only called for Gunner Runner to win, he also hit his exacta with West Coast taking second. That was the start of a fantastic year for Goldberg, who also cleaned up at the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park, as he nailed the top four horses in order, winning his exacta, trifecta and superfecta.
A legendary prognosticator and current CBS Sports expert, Goldberg couldn't have been more dead-on about the 2018 Kentucky Derby. He picked Justify to win, saying he excelled in the slop. The result: Justify sloshed to victory over Good Magic in the rain and mud by two-and-a-half lengths. He also cashed the Pick 4, Pick 5 and Pick 6 at Pimlico this year. He followed that up by pegging Justify as the horse to beat at the Belmont, and we all know what happened.
He got the 2019 season off to a great start by nailing the winning horse in the Pegasus World Cup, the richest horse race in North America. He also nailed the Gotham Stakes exacta last weekend, scoring $48 on a $2 bet, and nailed the exacta again at last week's Rebel Stakes, which earned $46 on a $2 wager. His ability to go straight to the source and get information from jockeys, trainers, and owners has made him a legendary horse racing handicapper. Anyone who has followed him is up big-time.
Now that the Louisiana Derby lineup is set, Goldberg is releasing his 2019 Louisiana Derby picks, predictions and exotic bets over at SportsLine. We can tell you he is high on Sueno, an 8-1 darkhorse. The Keith Desormeaux-trained colt took second in his two big stakes races coming into the Louisiana Derby 2019 and can certainly compete for another top finish on Saturday.
"He ran second in the Southwest Stakes and was also second in the Sham Stakes," Goldberg told SportsLine. "He's a talented, steady horse. He's a stalker and has the right kind of running style for this race." Sueno is trained by J. Keith Desormeaux and has never finished worse than third in a race in his career. He has wins at Golden Gate and Del Mar.
We can also tell you Goldberg wants no part of Roiland as a potential spoiler. He's one of seven horses listed at 12-1 Louisiana Derby odds or shorter, but don't look for a March Madness upset from the Thomas Amoss-trailed colt.
Roiland drew the No. 1 post position and finished a competitive third in the Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds earlier this year, behind War of Will and Country Horse, the two 2019 Louisiana Derby favorites. But in this crowded and competitive field, Goldberg believes Roiland may get lost in the mix and fade.
Instead, Goldberg is all over a must-see underdog to compete for a win in the Louisiana Derby. This horse has all the tools to put together a complete run, and if the horse hits as Goldberg expects, you could be looking at a massive payout.
