Manchester United fires manager David Moyes
Less than a year into his tenure at Old Trafford, United's manager David Moyes is out.
Manchester United will be searching for a more stable successor to legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson after the club officially fired its manager, David Moyes, after just 10 months on the job.
The move comes in the midst of a terrible season for United – currently in seventh place in the Premier League – and comes just one season after the storied franchise won the league title.
The club has tabbed aging midfielder Ryan Giggs to be the interim manager until the end of the season (May 11) or until management finds a proper replacement.
“The club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role,” Manchester United said in a statement on Tuesday. Moyes was just 27-24 in all games as the manager, and United has lost a record 11 Premier League games this year.
Moyes was less than a year into his six-year contract at Old Trafford, and a 2-0 loss to Everton over the weekend may have ultimately sealed his fate. “The job is to win football matches,” he said to the team’s website following the loss. “There is a lot talked about style, but it’s more important to win, and we didn’t do that.”
Moyes inherited an aging team with little in the way of reserves, but a fractured relationship with veterans like Giggs and Robin van Persie seems to have played a role in his dismissal.
There's now the question of what to do with the banner that will be removed from United's stadium, deeming Moyes "The Chosen One." The BBC reported it could wind up in a museum.
Regardless of that outcome, there will no shortage of suitors for the position.
