Preakness Stakes 2021 payouts: Rombauer wins in an upset followed by Midnight Bourbon and Medina Spirit

Rombauer closed at 11-1 to win the Preakness Stakes

The 2021 Preakness Stakes is in the books and Rombauer (11-1) is the winner at Pimlico. Rombauer, ridden by Flavien Prat, outran co-favorites Midnight Bourbon and Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, sprinting the two leaders down the back stretch to capture the bed of Black Eyed Susans and keep the Triple Crown of American thoroughbred racing on the shelf for 2021. 

Before the race, SportsLine's Bob Weir listed Rombauer among his contenders to win:

"It's fair to question if he will ultimately be better on the turf, but his dirt performances are competitive enough. He finished a well beaten third in the Blue Grass behind Essential Quality and Highly Motivated but was clear another four lengths to fourth. I'm expecting him to drop back and make a late run. I suspect it will come up a little short, but if a pace battle does occur early, he's the one to fear late."  

Rombauer was two lengths off the pace at the top of the stretch before closing in a blur to win the Preakness for owners Diane and John Fradkin and trainer Mike McCarthy. 

The the final jewel of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, is set for June 5 at Belmont Park in Long Island, New York.

Rombauer with the win! SportsLine's Bob Weir had him as a win contender, with this to say:

"6 Rombauer (12-1) is worth a look. It's fair to question if he will ultimately be better on the turf, but his dirt performances are competitive enough. Latest odds update: Concert Tour moves from 4-1 to 7-2 but remains the third favorite behind Midnight Bourbon (5-2) and Medina Spirit (3-1). Crowded Trade remains at 8-1, while Unbridled Honor drops to 12-1, which are the same odds on Keepmeinmind. Risk Taking and Rombauer join Ram at 13-1, while France Go De Ina moves to 22-1.

Based in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., racing insider Bob Weir has been handicapping and following horse racing since reading Andy Beyer's landmark handicapping book "Picking Winners" in the late 1980s. Weir is highly invested in the Beyer Speed Figure, a number assigned to every race run by a horse that measures how fast the horse ran. He uses the figure as the backbone of his handicapping. Welcome to our coverage of the Preakness, the second jewel of the Triple Crown. Medina Spirit will look to pick up a second straight win after a shocking victory in the Kentucky Derby, followed by news that the horse tested positive for a steroid and the subsequent agreement to allow Medina Spirit to compete in this race after passing three drug tests.

However, it's Midnight Bourbon who enters the day as the favorite after finishing sixth at Churchill Downs.
