Runner engages in premature victory celebration, loses
Just like first base, you always run through the finish line. Taoufik Makhloufi learns this the hard way.
An African man won the 800-meter race at the Shanghai Diamond League meet Sunday. Just not the one who was celebrating the victory.
Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria took the lead at the top of the homestretch and, as you can see above, stretched his arms wide and stuck out his tongue. The only problem was Robert Biwott of Kenya wasn't finished running, and the 18-year-old edged Makhloufi by four hundredths of a second.
(If you haven't the patience to wait, the action begins just past the one-minute mark.)
To add insult to injury, Makhloufi didn't even know he had lost until after he was awarded the victor's flowers, which race officials had to take away from him, according to LetsRun.com. Oh, he also missed out on the $10,000 purse.
It almost plays like an instructional video to children extolling the dangers of resting on one's laurels. And this isn't some low-level running: Makhloufi was the 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the 1500 meters.
