Defending US Open champion and world No. 1 Serena Williams headlines the women’s field, which was announced on Thursday.
Serena, her sister Venus, and three other former US Open champions including Maria Sharapova will also compete at Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The USTA said that 100 of the top 102 women in the world will compete. Other former grand slam champions scheduled to play include recent Wimbledon winner Marion Bartoli as well as reigning Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka.
Twenty-year-old Sloane Stephens, ranked No. 16 in the world, was also in the field as one of the 10 Americans.
Serena Williams is seeking her 17th grand slam title and her fifth US Open championship, which would tie her with Steffi Graf for the second-most all-time. Williams was most recently, unceremoniously, bounced from Wimbledon in the fourth round by then-23rd-ranked Sabine Lisicki.
The tournament kicks of Aug. 26 and will run through Sept. 8.
