Top-seeded North Carolina is one loss from elimination after getting humbled Sunday by rival NC State at the College World Series.
Wolfpack lefty Carlos Rodon, the potential No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft, tossed eight shutout innings in the 8-1 win, striking out eight and allowing five hits. He also dominated the Tar Heels in the ACC tournament.
Seven NC State players produced at least one RBI, with Brett Williams, Logan Ratledge and Bryan Adametz stroking two hits each. The Wolfpack knocked out ACC Pitcher of the Year Kent Emanuel in the third inning.
NC State will face Sunday night’s LSU-UCLA winner on Tuesday, while UNC will face the loser. Making their sixth trip to Omaha in eight years, the Tar Heels entered as a 2-to-1 favorite to win the CWS.
In Saturday’s action, Indiana beat Louisville 2-0 and Mississippi State edged Oregon State 5-4.
