Tour de France: Vincenzo Nibali continues dominance, wins Stage 18
Vincenzo Nibali extended his overall lead Thursday.
Prior to the start of Stage 18 in the Tour de France, the prevailing belief was that it marked the best chance for challengers to make up ground on overall leader Vincenzo Nibali.
Things didn't turn out that way at all.
Nibali broke away in the final mountain stage, winning by almost a minute. He now holds a lead of better than seven minutes.
There was a small herd of challengers at the start of the stage, about 20, but that group dwindled through the mountains. Nibali eventually extended his lead, winning the stage by more than a minute. His biggest challenge, perhaps, came from a female fan talking on her cell phone.
Looks like he handled her, too.
With the mountain stages behind him, Nibali should have little trouble cruising to victory over the weekend.
