Will Xavi, Frank Lampard be joining David Villa with MLS' NYCFC?
NYCFC won't begin play in the MLS for another year but they already landed one big-name player in David Villa and could reportedly get Xavi and Frank Lampard as well.
New York City Football Club won't play a game for almost another year but in true fashion of a team that will call Yankee Stadium home, they are trying to gobble up every big name they can.
The team made waves with its first signing, brining aboard Spanish national star David Villa, who will be on loan until NYCFC begin playing. And now according to a report from Radio Catalunya, another member of La Furia Roja could be following Villa to the Big Apple.
Xavi Hernandez, simply known as Xavi, is in the market for a new team after spending his entire club career with FC Barcelona. The report from Radio Catalunya (in Spanish) goes on to say that Xavi met with Mancester City CEO (and given Man City owns NYCFC, NYCFC CEO) Ferran Soriano a while back and something could be in the works.
Xavi, 34, has been a key figure in Spain's dominant run on the international level in recent years. The central midfielder had 13 goals in 133 career caps with the national team and last season had four goals in 47 appearances for Barca. Like just about every big-name player who moves to the MLS from Europe, Xavi is certainly on the downside of his career but would be another huge name to market the team and the league and would only add to the competition level.
NYCFC probably isn't done there either because for weeks now it has been the rumored destination for English national and now former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard. The 36-year-old will not be back with Chelsea where he has played since 2001-02. The Mirror reported two weeks ago that a deal between Lampard and NYCFC had already been reached but Lampard will make an official announcement known soon.
Lampard is coming off a down campaign for Chelsea that saw him post eight goals in 40 appearances for the EPL power. But it was just a season ago that Lampard had 17 goals in 50 caps. He has also been a mainstay on the English national team for years including his spot on the World Cup team in Brazil.
We certainly will have to wait and see if either of these players will be joining NYCFC or not but one thing is being made perfectly clear; NYCFC is serious about competing in the MLS from Day 1 and even if these players are past their primes, it's good for MLS to add some star power.
