The Masters has a numbers problem right now.
As was pointed out in the Augusta Chronicle, the tournament could have a field in 2014 that exceeds 100 golfers for the first time in 50 years.
It's already at 90 and we haven't even reached January 1.
Not since 1966 when 103 golfers competed have the pairings at Augusta topped 100.
There are 18 ways to qualify for the Masters right now and 14 golfers were added to the 2014 field on Monday based on No. 17 ("The 50 leaders on the Final Official World Golf Ranking for the previous calendar year").
The list includes Hideki Matsuyama, Thomas Bjorn, Jamie Donaldson, Victor Dubuisson, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Francesco Molinari, Rickie Fowler,Matteo Manassero, David Lynn, Thongchai Jaidee, Peter Hanson, Joost Luiten and Branden Grace.
Also Jimmy Walker, Ryan Moore, and Chris Kirk won tournaments this fall and were awarded spots not previously available because of the new wraparound schedule.
So what are the odds that we top 100 golfers in April (a number I'm sure those in charge at Augusta would prefer to stay away from)? Well the largest increase in field size from the end of one year until the Masters since the FedEx Cup was created is 11 and that happened this year.
The two ways golfers can qualify is by winning a PGA Tour tournament between now and then or getting inside the top 50 in the world by March 30.
I think it's going to happen again.
