A strong mix of up-and-coming PGA Tour players and established pros are set to tee off Thursday at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas at the 2021 Shriners Children's Open. The field includes 11 of the top 25 players in the world, led by No. 8 Louis Oosthuizen and ninth-ranked Brooks Koepka. Norwegian star Viktor Hovland also is expected to be right in the mix alongside a youthful group featuring Sam Burns, the winner last week in Mississippi, and reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Will Zalatoris. Caesars Sportsbook lists Hovland and Scottie Scheffler as the 22-1 co-favorites in its latest 2021 Shriners Children's Open odds, with Koepka, Burns, Zalatoris and Abraham Ancer all at 25-1.
Will Burns continue his recent run and make him a no-brainer 2021 Shriners Children's Open Fantasy golf pick? Or can Zalatoris or another young golfer rise to the top and make you look like a star? 2021 Shriners Children's Open Fantasy golf picks
Gates expects Hovland's first Shriners appearance to be the start to a great season, and he is fully backing him this week. The Norwegian has established himself as a top talent since turning pro in 2019, and he has three worldwide wins. One of those was last season's Mayakoba Golf Classic, and he won the European Tour's BMW International in June. He had five finishes in the top three and ended the year ninth in scoring average (69.888). He was fifth in strokes gained off the tee and eighth tee-to-green, and he broke par on almost 25 percent of his holes (ninth).
Meanwhile, Gates is fading Koepka based on his track record at TPC Summerlin and his unpredictability. The 31-year-old has four major titles but has been prone to injuries and loses focus in some tournaments. He was the runner-up at the Shriners in 2017 and tied for fourth in 2015 but has missed the cut in his three other appearances. This is an odd year, so maybe the pattern will hold, and he went 2-2 for Team USA in the Ryder Cup. But he was outside the top 25 in two of his last three events and withdrew from the Tour Championship with an injury. Gates doesn't know what to expect and has several other solid options for your Fantasy picks.
