The 2021 Wyndham Championship is the final PGA Tour event before the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, so a talented field has descended upon Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. A number of players need a good performance in order to rack up some late FedEx Cup points to make a postseason push. Hideki Matsuyama won the 2021 Masters and he's one of the biggest names in the 2021 Wyndham Championship field. Matsuyama is currently 14th in the FedEx Cup standings and could theoretically surge to as high as third with a victory.
The latest 2021 Wyndham Championship odds from Caesars Sportsbook list Matsuyama at 14-1. Webb Simpson, the 2011 champion of this event, is going off as the 12-1 favorite on the PGA odds board. Other Wyndham Championship 2021 contenders include Louis Oosthuizen (18-1) and Patrick Reed (22-1). One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2021 Wyndham Championship: Matsuyama, the defending Masters champion and one of the top favorites at 14-1, barely cracks the top five. Matsuyama has had a sensational season thus far, winning his first major championship at Augusta National and securing a runner-up finish last week at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
However, Matsuyama has struggled at the Wyndham Championship throughout his career. In fact, Matsuyama has missed the cut at this event in three of his last five starts. In addition, Matsuyama has been ice-cold with his putter, entering this week's event ranked 112th in one-putt percentage (39.52), 172nd in total putting (308.2) and 180th in strokes gained: putting. He's not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values for 2021 Wyndham Championship bets.
Another surprise: Gary Woodland, a 40-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. Woodland has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 2019 U.S. Open winner hasn't had a great season and needs points to ensure that he'll be around for the 2021 FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Woodland is currently 108th in the standings with only 125 players being invited to the Northern Trust next week, so he'll inevitably want to make sure he's inside that cutoff and surge into the top 70 to try to earn his way to the BMW Championship two weeks later. That should serve as plenty of motivation for an undoubtedly skilled player.
In addition, the four-time PGA Tour champion is coming off a top-10 finish last week at the Barracuda Championship, and he's finished inside the top-15 in four of his last nine starts on the PGA Tour. If he's striking the ball well this week, he'll have a great shot at finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2021 Wyndham Championship.
