The final event of the PGA Tour's fall portion tees off Thursday in St. Simons Island, Ga. at the 2022 RSM Classic, and it could come down to the wire again. The tournament at Sea Island Resort has gone to a playoff four of the past six years, though Talor Gooch won last year by three strokes. Robert Streb (2020), Tyler Duncan (2019) and Charles Howell III (2018) all needed extra holes for their victories, and MacKenzie Hughes (2016) had to beat four others who finished the 72 holes tied at 17 under par. Hughes, a runner-up last year and winner of the Sanderson Farms this fall, and two-time champion Streb are among six former winners in the RSM Classic 2022 field. It also features eight major champions, including Webb Simpson, Jason Day and Justin Rose. The event has been held at Sea Island Resort the past seven years, and the average winning score is 20 under par

Brian Harman, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 26 in the world, is the 16-1 favorite in the latest 2022 RSM Classic odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Seamus Power (20-1), Tom Hoge (20-1) and Day (22-1) also are among the favorites, followed by Taylor Montgomery (25-1) and Denny McCarthy (25-1). Hughes is priced at 30-1 and Streb is a 100-1 longshot. Before you make any 2022 RSM Classic picks or bets, you really need to see the PGA Tour predictions, best bets and sleepers from SportsLine golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.

McDonald also nailed last week's Houston Open. backing Finau at 25-1. "I was surprised to see Finau's name below the likes of (Aaron) Wise and (Maverick) McNealy given his recent form," the expert said, "but we will take it and ask questions later." The 33-year-old simply went out and shot 65-62 in the first two rounds and ran away with his fifth tour victory.

McDonald also has been on the money on his matchup plays, hitting eight of his past 15, and he is up more than 13 units on those picks this season. McDonald also hit a first-round leader at the Zozo Championship, backing 80-1 Brendan Steele. Anyone who followed McDonald's advice cashed in huge.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 RSM Classic field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions

Top 2022 RSM Classic expert picks

One surprise for this week at Sea Island is that McDonald is fading Montgomery, saying the course is "a less-than-stellar statistical fit." One of the 27-year-old's biggest strengths is off the tee, and the shorter layouts in St. Simons Island won't allow him to highlight that skill. He also is an excellent putter, but that wasn't the case last week as he finished in a tie for 57th at the Houston Open. That broke a string of 10 straight top-15 finishes dating to his time on the Korn Ferry Tour. McDonald believes the tour rookie could be in for more struggles this week.

Meanwhile, McDonald says Matt Kuchar (50-1) "has found the fountain of youth to begin this season," and he says he could make a strong run. The 44-year-old tied for 12th at the Fortinet Championship to kick off his 2022-23 campaign and has finished in the top 30 in his past two outings. He is 13th in strokes gained approach and 17th tee to green, and being on familiar turf should give him a boost. The longtime St. Simons Island resident has finished in the top 25 in five of his 10 outings at Sea Island, and given his current form, he should be in the mix. See who else to pick at The RSM Classic here.
