Just 19 golfers in the history of the sport have won at least five major championships. There are two players who have an opportunity to become No. 20 if either can win the 2022 U.S. Open, Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka. They've both won this tournament before, McIlroy in 2011 and Koepka going back-to-back in 2017 and 2018. The U.S. Open 2022 will take place at a course neither has ever competed at before, The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. Koepka is a 30-1 long shot, as it's been nearly a year-and-a-half since he won any event. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner.

Top 2022 U.S. Open predictions
One huge shocker the model is calling for at the U.S. Open 2022: Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top five. Scheffler has been on fire this season, producing four wins and seven top-10 finishes, highlighted by his victory at Augusta. But he's cooled a bit the last few weeks.
He's finished 15th or worse in his last three events and missed the cut at the PGA Championship. He also hasn't found much success at the U.S. Open, missing the cut twice in four tries. The model doesn't like him at these premium odds, making him a golfer to fade in your 2022 U.S. Open bets.
Another surprise: Will Zalatoris, a 22-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the 2022 U.S. Open title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. No golfer has gained more strokes per round (2.54) in majors than Zalatoris since 2020, according to Twenty First Group. His results in these starts back up the metrics, as he's placed in the top 10 in five of his seven major appearances during this stretch.
Only a handful of golfers in the 2022 U.S. Open field have played competitive rounds at The Country Club, and Zalatoris is one of them, courtesy of the 2013 U.S. Amateur. He will combine that course experience with stellar play this year on tour, as the Texan ranks first in strokes gained: approach the green, sixth in greens in regulation percentage and 15th in driving distance. Given his major performances, superb season and intangibles, Zalatoris should heavily factor into U.S. Open 2022 bets, according to the model.
