2025 PGA Championship predictions for Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele
One shocker the model is calling at the PGA Championship 2025: Xander Schauffele, the defending champion and a two-time major winner, barely cracks the top 10 of the leaderboard. Schauffele broke through for his first major title at the PGA Championship in 2024, beating DeChambeau by one stroke. He went on to win the Open Championship at Royal Troon last July, but he hasn't tasted victory since.
Schauffele dealt with a rib injury early in 2025 that caused him to miss two months of action. The 31-year-old has recorded just one top-10 finish this season, and he's been widely inconsistent off the tee, which will be a major issue at a course like Quail Hollow. Schauffele enters the 2025 PGA Championship ranked 158th in driving accuracy (54.17%) and 162nd in strokes gained: off the tee (-0.439). He also ranks outside the top 150 in scoring average (71.04), scrambling (55.80%) and one-putt percentage (38.19%). Schauffele is going off at 19-1 at FanDuel Sportsbook.
The model has also locked in its projection for Rory McIlroy, a five-time major winner and the newest Grand Slam champion. The 36-year-old is already a 29-time PGA Tour winner and four of those victories came at Quail Hollow Club in the Wells Fargo Championship, which is now known as the Truist Championship. McIlroy earned his first career PGA Tour victory at Quail Hollow in 2010 and then went on to win at this iconic track again in 2015, 2021 and 2024.
Three of those victories have been by four shots or more and he'll finally be able to breathe a sigh of relief this week after ending a 10-year major championship drought and completing the career grand slam at the 2025 Masters. However, McIlroy was a somewhat disappointing t-22nd when the 2017 PGA Championship was held at Quail Hollow and he's only been top 10 three times in his last 10 tries at the PGA Championship.
Meanwhile, the model has examined Scottie Scheffler's chances of winning his first major outside of Augusta National. Still ranked No. 1 in the world, Scheffler is coming off a victory in his last start, which was his first win of the year. He had four victories, however, entering last year's PGA Championship, which infamously saw him get arrested prior to the second round. The two-time Masters champ leads the tour in strokes gained for the third straight season, though he hasn't been able to put it all together at this specific major.
Scheffler's last missed cut at a major tournament came at the 2022 PGA Championship, but he also has four top 10s over his last five starts at this tournament. He has minimal course history with Quail Hollow Club, having never competed on it in an individual event. But he did play the course during the 2022 Presidents Cup, which saw the high of Scheffler winning the event as part of Team USA, but also had the low of him recording the fewest points among the 12-man American team. Scheffler is part of an All-Star grouping for the first two rounds, with he, McIlroy and Xander Schauffele teeing off at 8:22 a.m. ET on Thursday.
