Tiger Woods will serve as an assistant captain in his second consecutive team event, the 2017 Presidents Cup at Liberty National. Woods helped captain last year's winning U.S. Ryder Cup team and said on Tuesday that he's thrilled for another opportunity.

"It's very different," Woods said. "There are more matches. There are more points available. Different rules. I've been picking their brains about how we do the selection process, head up. That's something we've been talking about in great detail."

The Presidents Cup is different in that you pick your matches one by one instead of making a roster and shoving it out there like in the Ryder Cup. Woods will no doubt be a captain of both American teams someday, so the process intrigues him.

The U.S. squad intrigues him, too. All 12 Americans are inside the top 30 in the world (Phil Mickelson is the lowest at No. 30) whereas six international team members rank outside the top 30. Woods said the talent level has actually given the U.S. captains some issues, good ones, though.

"We got a lot of young guys on the team," Woods said. "Good energy. I think this is one of our better teams that we've had. For the captains, it's been tough to make pairings because there are so many options that we have. It's a great problem to have.

"We have a lot of different potential options. Guys are really playing well at the same time. We want to get the guys out here gelling, relaxed. ... That's going to be what we're trying to do today and tomorrow."

As for why the U.S. has experienced so much success in the past (the international team only has one win), Woods said the format favors the United States In the Ryder Cup, players are only required to play the Sunday singles matchups. That's not true of the Presidents Cup.

"I think that overall we've had deeper teams, 1 through 12," Woods said. "I think it was the nature of the format. When every guy had to play, you couldn't hide anybody who maybe wasn't playing well or was injured late in the year. A lot of different things can happen. When you have to play every day, you get exposed."
