Bernhard Langer wins Senior British Open by record margin
You thought Rory McIlroy won in a romp at Hoylake -- Bernhard Langer destroyed McIlroy's margin of victory at the Senior Open on Sunday.
It kind of felt like a non-senior was playing the Senior British Open on Sunday at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club.
That's because Bernhard Langer was busy beating runner-up Colin Montgomerie by -- this is not a typo -- 13 strokes in a rout for the ages.
As Justin Ray pointed out it's the largest victory ever on the Champions Tour.
Bernhard Langer wins Sr. British by 13 shots, the largest margin of victory in @ChampionsTour history (major or non-major)— Justin Ray (@JustinRayGC) July 27, 2014
The largest margin of victory ever at a men's major is 15 strokes by Tiger Woods at the historic 2000 US Open. Langer was actually approaching that before making par on five of his final six holes.
Here's a look at the leaderboard for the week:
And a tweet that made me laugh (the funniest ones are always the ones that are, or could be, true):
NOTE: The Senior Open Championship was NOT a Modified Stableford event. That was a 13-shot win for Bernhard Langer.— Ryan Ballengee (@RyanBallengee) July 27, 2014
There was actually a lot of chatter about Langer maybe being considered for the Ryder Cup later this year, which would be insane given that he's 56 years old. Then again, he finished T8 at the Masters this year and has four Champions Tour wins in 2014 including this monstrosity at Porthcawl.
Stranger things have happened -- like winning a major by 13 strokes.
