Masters: Bubba Watson becomes second golfer to card 10 at No. 12
Defending Masters champion Bubba Watson showed just how tough the No. 12 hole can be at Augusta when he recorded a 10 -- the second 10 of the day on the hole at that point.
Despite appearances, the 155-yard 12th hole at the Masters is annually one of the toughest tests of golf, especially on Sunday. In 1992, the golf gods kept Fred Couples' tee shot out of Rae's Creek and he went on to win the tournament. And perhaps those same gods have something in store for the leaders as they make their way to Amen Corner on Sunday. But we've already seen the damage this hole -- innocuously known as Golden Bell -- can inflict.
Early in the final round, Kevin Na needed 10 strokes -- including three that found the bottom of Rae's Creek -- to navigate the hole. Not to be outdone, defending Masters champion Bubba Watson also carded a 10 on No. 12 that also included three balls in the drink.
"I can tell you, [Watson] tried on every one [of those 10 strokes]," CBS analyst Ian Baker-Finch said with all the solemnity that you would expect at Augusta.
"How about a one-putt 10," Jim Nantz added, bringing us back to reality.
"Just incredible," Baker-Finch continued. "Just goes to show anything can happen down here at Amen Corner, even on a day with no wind blowing, ideal scoring conditions, green a little slower because of the rain."
Over the first three days, Watson had little trouble with the 12th, shooting par-birdie-par. His real nemesis had been No. 11, where he had two double bogeys (Friday and Saturday) and a bogey (Sunday).
After shooting 4 over through the first 36 holes, Watson was 4 under in the last 27 holes. Then his experience at the back nine at Augusta happened, which included the second 10 seen on the 12th at that point on Sunday.
