Masters Countdown: The coolest shot of Magnolia Lane
This photo of Magnolia Lane from 1979 is pretty outstanding.
The Masters is just around the corner (13 days, to be exact) and we're pretty excited. There's plenty of golf to be played between now and then but not enough writing about Augusta. We're trying to rectify that by doing a Masters countdown every day until the ceremonial tee shot.
I love old photos of Augusta and the Masters. There are the ones I'm supposed to love like the iconic shots of Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazan.
Then there are the champions throughout the years -- Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus and Phil Mickelson and so on.
But the ones I love most are the ones not of the golf.
Here is a shot of a Magnolia Lane in 1979 and I don't know, it just makes me feel something and what more do you want from photography or film than to feel something?
There's just so much hope in that photo. From the car to the people to the way it's lit. It's a classic to me.
You don't see regular cars drive down Magnolia Lane much anymore -- Max Adler detailed the homogeneousness of that in this article about Tiger Woods -- so it's kind of a throwback to the old days.
Speaking of Woods, he once called the 330-yard stretch "perfect."
"It's still pretty special. If you're ever looking for the perfect entrance to a great golf club, well, here it is."
Yes, here it is.
