The "fifth major" has some work to do this week to live up to the year's first major, but with 48 of the top 50 golfers in the world playing this week, I have faith it will respond adequately.

TPC Sawgrass is our destination this week and the upper crust of the game is showing out for the $10 million purse. For some of them, it might be all they're showing out for.

Let's take a look at this tournament.

Participants and odds

Jordan Spieth: 7-1
Rory McIlroy: 7-1
Henrik Stenson: 16-1
Justin Rose: 18-1
Jim Furyk: 20-1
Dustin Johnson: 25-1
Jason Day: 25-1
Tiger Woods: 28-1
Hideki Matsuyama: 30-1
Jimmy Walker: 30-1
Sergio Garcia: 33-1

Field strength: A+

Like I said, the stars are all here. What's interesting is who the favorites are. You hva Jim Furyk and Henrik Stenson both at 20-1 or better and Phil Mickelson adn Rickie Fowler both at 40-1 or worse. Patrick Reed is 55-1! There's a lot of value going on here right now.

Story to watch: We were robbed of a Rory McIlroy-Jordan Spieth match play finals last week at the Match Play Championship, so maybe we'll get them in the final pairing on Sunday afternoon.

There's been a lot of talk the last few months about these two grabbing the sport by the throat. A Players Championship duel with Tiger Woods looking on would go a long way for golf.

It's a big boy event.

Let's pick this illustrious field.

Expert picks

Winner Rory McIlroy. [Throws hands up in air, posits that there's no other reasonable pick this week other than one of these first two dudes.] When Rory gets cranking, he gets cranking. Match Play might have been the genesis. Odds: 7-1
Top 10 I think people were a little fooled about the fact that Jordan Spieth missed the Round of 16 last week. You could argue he played the best golf of anyone. It's difficult to see him not contending this week. Odds: 7-1
Sleeper Lee Westwood has quietly been playing some great golf. There's a reason he has better odds than Rickie Fowler, Billy Horschel, Patrick Reed and Brooks KoepkaOdds: 40-1
