Rory McIlroy had a weird week at the Players Championship

You'd be hard-pressed to find a weirder week than Rory McIlroy had the last four days at the Players Championship.

First, let's look back at a quote McIlroy had after shooting 65-70 to finish inside the top 10 at the Wells Fargo Championship.

"I'm in the top 10 every week and it is fine, it's whatever. But it's not wins.

"It's another solid week. They're top 10s, but they're top 10s without getting in contention either," McIlory said. "I don't want to back door and top 10 it every week. It's nice to pick up a nice paycheck but it doesn't really get the adrenaline going."

So we've established that he's not a fan of being out of contention all week.

Which is exactly what he did again this week.

McIlroy shot 70-74 to barely make the cut -- and even then only made it by making birdie on No. 18 late on Friday.

Then he went 69-66 on the weekend to get into the top 10 at the time he finished, where he'll likely remain as everyone else finishes up.

But here's where it gets weird. McIlroy played the back nine in 17 under with 19 birdies on the week. If the back nine was an entire round he shot 65-62. That's insane!

The problem is that he played the front in eight over with 10 bogeys and two double bogeys.

McIlroy didn't sound too disappointed after his round -- and he shouldn't be as he's the only player since stats started being kept in 1983 to birdie No. 18 at Sawgrass in all four rounds.

"Things are heading in the right direction," said McIlroy.

You get the feeling that despite another probably backdoor top 10, he's right.
