The kid was not, is not, a fluke.

Jordan Spieth went out in 35 at the Players Championship on Thursday (he started on the back nine) and came in in 32 for a tidy little first-round 67.

He sits with a host of other golfers at 5 under, two shots behind leader Russell Henley.

Spieth's card was perfect, too:

He didn't sound too excited or overwhelmed after his round, however.

"If you're hitting it out of the fairway you can go at alot of these pins," said Spieth. "Long way to go, though."

There is, but history seems to indicate that being low early matters at Sawgrass:

Spieth has staying power, I'd be shocked if he wasn't at least mixing it up on the weekend in Florida.

Other stars

Sergio Garcia (5 under): In it for 70 holes last year, Garcia once again put himself near the top of the leaderboard after day one. He only needed seven shots to get through Nos. 17-18 this round compared to 13 in the final round last season.

Justin Rose (5 under): Rose made 11 pars, six birdies, a bogey, and a single great quote after his first round:

Lee Westwood (5 under):  used a bogey-free 67 to briefly snag the lead during the first round of the Players Championship before Henley took it over.

Westwood started off birdie-birdie before putting it in cruise control the rest of the way. Here's a look at his scorecard.

Dustin Johnson (4 under): Johnson hit an lol-worthy second shot at the par-5 No. 9 hole -- his final hole of the day. It got him to 4 under for a first-round 68:

Bubba Watson (3 under): Pretty slick day from the Masters champ. He bogeyed the last (which I've heard is not great) but a 34-35 outing will get the job done. He's six back of Kaymer.

Rickie Fowler (1 under): Here's how Fowler's day went. It was slightly better than his hat-shirt game:

Adam Scott (5 over): Not a great day for Scotty (to say the least) but this approach was tremendous.
