The richest purse in golf
The 2014 Players Championship will have a $10 million purse.
It's not the most prestigious or the greatest tournament in the world but it is the most lucrative (well, it's tied for the most lucrative).
The Players Championship has yielded $1.71 million to its winner each of the last six years and was bumped from a purse of $9.5 million overall to the first eight-figure purse in PGA Tour history at $10 million this season.
The winner will get $1.8 million.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem likes it like that.
"For years and years, The Players Championship has been the No. 1 purse in golf. We like that designation," Finchem said in the fall.
Here's a look at the five biggest purses in golf:
T1. Players Championship: $10 million
T1. PGA Championship: $10 million
T3. Match Play Championship: $9 million
T3. Cadillac Championship: $9 million
T3. Bridgestone Invitational: $9 million
All the majors were played with $8 million purses in 2013 and the Masters was at the same spot this year. Presumably both Opens will be at the $8 million mark, too.
