Rory McIlroy tied his best round to par of competitive golf in 2013 with a 65 on Thursday at the HSBC Championship in China. He leads Jamie Donaldson and Fernandez Gonazlo-Castano by two strokes each after the first round.

McIlroy's three best rounds of the calendar year are all 7 under scores. This one, his final round at the Cadillac Championship and his third round at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

He said afterward he feels like he's on top of things again.

"It was good, it felt good to be out there and be in control of my golf ball," McIlroy said. "It's only one round of golf, but it's definitely the way I wanted and needed to start this week."

He's making his buddy Tiger Woods look like a prophet, too. A few weeks ago, speaking on a conference call, Woods said McIlroy was close.

"I think ... give him a little bit more time. I think he's starting to put the pieces together, starting to play a little bit more. He showed some really good signs towards the end of the season that the things he's working on are starting to come together."

I'm glad to see McIlroy's game start coming around. As a fan of golf I want him to be good and I especially want him to be in top form with the Ryder Cup just 11 months away.

It'll be tough for him to hang on in China with Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, and Graeme McDowell lurking but if he does it could be the perfect springboard into 2014.
